Scutellaria barbata Perennial plant, the Rhizomes of Scutellaria Barbata are short and thick, producing clusters of fibrous roots. Stems erect, 12-35(55) cm tall,-angled, base groups 1-2 mm, glabrous or sparsely appressed trichomes on upper part of Rachis, unbranched or with more or less branches. Leaves shortly petiolate or subsessile, petiole 1-3 mm long, ventral concave dorsally CONVEX, sparsely covered with small hairs; Leaf Blade triangular-ovoid or ovoid-lanceolate, sometimes ovate-orbicular, 1.3-3.2 cm long, 0.5-1(1.4) cm wide, apex acute, base broadly cuneate or subtruncate, margin sparsely obtuse with shallow teeth, olive green above, Pale Green below sometimes purplish, both surfaces sparsely adnate to small hairs or scarcely glabrous along veins, lateral veins 2 ~ 3 pairs, raised with midrib above depression below. Flowers solitary in axils of upper leaves of stems or branches, with Flowering Stems 4-11 cm long; lower part of bracts leaflike, but smaller, up to 8 mm long, upper part smaller, 2-4.5 mm long, elliptic to long elliptic, entire, upper scattered lower sparsely hirsute along veins; pedicel 1-2 mm long, puberulent, middle with a pair of needle-shaped bracteoles Ca. 0.5 mm ciliate. Calyx flowering about 2 mm, outside puberulent along veins, margin ciliate, scutum about 1 mm high, fruiting calyx 4.5 mm long, scutum 2 mm high. Corolla purple-blue, 9-13 mm long, outer pubescent, Inner Throat Sparsely Pilose; Corolla Tube base capsule large, 1.5 mm wide, ascending gradually wider to throat width up to 3.5 mm; limb 2-lipped, upper lip galeate, semicircular, 1.5 mm long, apex rounded, middle Lower LIP lobes trapezoid, entire, 2.5 mm long, 4 mm wide, 2 lateral lobes triangular-ovoid, 1.5 mm wide, apex acute. Stamens 4, anterior pair longer, slightly exserted, with fertile semi-drug, degenerated semi-drug inconspicuous, posterior pair shorter, included, with whole drug, locules cleft with barbate; filaments flattened, anterior to medial and posterior to both lower sides covered with small sparse pubescence. Style slender, apex acute,-lobed. Disk discoid, protuberant anterior, posterior extending into short ovary stipe. Ovary 4-lobed, lobes equal in size. Nutlets Brown, oblate, Ca. 1 mm in Diam. , with verrucous processes. Flowering and fruiting period 4 ~ 7 months.

Born on the edge of paddy field, stream or wet grassland, below 2000 meters above sea level. Herba scutellariae enjoys a warm climate and a humid, semi-cloudy environment. The soil requirements are not strict, cultivation of deep soil, loose, fertile, well-drained Sandy loam or Humus Loam as well. The soil is sticky heavy and the low-lying plot is easy to accumulate water not suitable for planting. It is often wild in hilly and flat areas of the field edge or next to the stream. Prefer a relatively humid environment, too dry areas of poor growth.
