SCROPHULARIA Ningpoensis is a herbaceous plant of the family SCROPHULARIACEAE, which can reach more than one meter. Stems quadrangular, shallowly Sulcate, wingless or narrowly winged, glabrous or more or less white curly, often branched. Leaves mostly opposite and stipitate in lower part of stem, sometimes alternate and very short in upper part, stipitate up to 4.5 cm long, leaf blade varied, mostly ovate, sometimes ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate in upper part, base cuneate, rounded or subcordate, margin serrulate, thin for irregular thin double serrate, large to 30 cm long, 19 cm wide, the most narrow upper about 8 cm long, only 1 cm wide. Inflorescences are large open panicles, composed of terminal and axillary thyrses, up to 50 cm long, but in smaller plants only terminal thyrses, less than 10 cm long, often 2-4 reverted, pedicel 3-30 mm long, glandular hairy; flowers brown-purple, calyx 2-3 mm long, lobes orbicular, margin slightly membranous; Corolla 8-9 mm long, Corolla tube somewhat globose, upper lip longer than lower lip ca. 2.5 mm, lobes rounded, adjacent margins overlapping, lower Lip lobes more or less ovate, Middle Lobe slightly shorter; stamens slightly shorter than lower lip, filaments hypertrophic, staminodes large and nearly orbicular; style Ca. 3 mm, slightly longer than ovary. SCROPHULARIA ningpoensis significantly inhibited ear tumefaction induced by Croton oil in mice, toe tumefaction induced by Egg White, Carrageenin and Cobra Venom in rats, and Granuloma formation in mice. Antibacterial effect: The root and leaf of SCROPHULARIA Ningpoensis have weak bactericidal effect, and the minimum bactericidal concentration should be above 50mg/ml. The bacteriostatic effect of Scrophularia Ningpoensis leaf was stronger than that of Rhizoma Coptidis, especially for Staphylococcus aureus, followed by diphtheria and typhoid bacillus, but weaker than that of Rhizoma Coptidis. IMMUNOENHANCEMENT activity: subcutaneous injection of Harpagoside can restore the suppressed immune function of Yin deficiency mice, and both harpagoside and Harpagoside can promote the proliferation of Spleen lymphocyte in Yin deficiency mice. PHENYLPROPANOID glycosides XS-8 and XS-10 had significant repair effects on hydroxyl radical addition of Deoxynucleotides, while IRIDOID glycosides XS-6 and XS-7 had no obvious repair effects under the same conditions. Neither of them had obvious accumulative effect. The poisoning of mice was quiet, emaciation, slow reaction, diarrhea and black stool. No pathological changes were found in liver, spleen, heart, lung and kidney.
